HANLAN v. TRICKETT.
The racs for the championship of the world and the “Sportsman’s” Challenge Cup between Edward Hanlan and Edward Trickett was, says the “ Turf, Field, and Farm,” on Friday last made as nearly certain as it could bo by telegraph, and in the absence of the actual signature of articles of agreement. A cable despatch received from the London “ Sportsman,” saying that Trickett’s challenge for the championship, the Challenge Cup, and for £2OO a side had been received, and that Trickett was anxious to know if Hanlan would accept, and further that there was “ lots of money” behind Trickett was promptly submitted to Hanlan and his friends at Willard’s Hotel in Washington, D.C. They seemed well pleased at the prospect of a race with the Australian and authorised the following reply to the “Sportsman” by cable, which was duly sent: —“ Hanlan accepts Trickett’s challenge. Colonel Shaw will cover forfeit and name time. Hanlan delighted at prospect of meeting Trickett and hopes there will be lota of money behind him.”
