Sunday Grog SellingJohn Stewart, landlord of the Thames Hotel, was fined £1 and costs, and Joseph Q-allanders, landlord of the Pacific Hotel, £2 and costs for selling liquor on a Sunday. Criminal Sessions. At the Supreme Court the charge against Takamore, a Maori, for assault, is being gone into, WELLINGTON, July 9. The Horse-Whipping Case. At the Magistrate’s Court-day Eoberfc Atkinson, charged with horse-whipping the Collector of Customs, was sentenced to six weeks’ hard labor. The prisoner pleaded extenuating circumstances, because when an inquiry was held after his dismissal from the Customs, Mr McKellar, the collector, suppressed certain evidence in favor of him. DUNEDIN, July 9. Heavy'Gold. A private telegram to the “Star ” says : “ Heavy nuggets, struck in Jones’ claim in Long Volley, Panama, Creek range, from one to four ounces.’’ AUCKLAND, July 8. FireA destructive fire took place at Bast Hamilton last night at 11 o’clock, when it was ascertained that the premises occupied by Messrs Swan and Cochrane, wheelwrights, and Mr Lane, blacksmith, were on fire. No appliances being at hand it was found useless to try to save the buildings, but a few things were saved. Messrs Swan and Cochrane were insured in the South British on the buildings for £220. The stock and tools were uninsured. Tlie Polynesian MissionIntelligence received from Norfolk Island states that the Southern Cross, mission vessel, is proceeding on her rounds to the mission stations, calling at Samoa if possible, and taking the Bishop and the Eev. Messrs Palmer, Eioe, Commins, and Mr Coote, The Bishop is in good health, and fall of work. Nows from Caledonia states that eight convicts escaped in the English vessel Tomboy on the 16th, destination unknown. WELLINGTON, July 8. Criminal Sessions. G. W. Jackson, false pretences, and E. Littlecotfc, destruction of property, were acquitted. OAMARU, July 8. Coursing. The coursing for the President’s Cup was resumed to-day, and resulted in Miss Lucy boating Skiddaw Lass and winning the stake. DUNEDIN, July 8, Unpaid land Tax, Between seventy and eighty persons were summoned to this morning’s sitting of the E.M. Court for land tax unpaid them. Most of the defendants settled the claims, but in a few cases judgment was allowed to go by default, INVEEOAHGILL, July 8. Wanganui and Hew Plymouth wayIt is reported that the successful tenderers for the Carlyle contract of the Wanganui and New Plymouth Bail way are Messer Downes and Proctor, of Dunedin, and that the amount is slightly under £17,000. I am unable to vouch for the correctness ot this information, but give it as it has reached me, on apparently good authority.
