CANTERBURY SOCIETY OF ARTS.

A crowded meeting in the room of the Philosophical Society testified to the interest taken in the formation of an art society amongst us Mr H. J. Tanored was voted to the chair, and after considerable discussion the constitution of the society was agreed on and rules framed for its conduct. The following are some among the laws passed That members shall consist of two classes, viz, working members and ordinary members. Members of other art societies shall bo deemed honorary members.” “The annual subscription shell be as fellows, viz., for workirg members 10s 6d, and for ordinary members £1 Is.” “ There shall be an annual public exhibition, at which each working member shall exhibit at least one original work of art, such work of art being his own production.” “The government of tho society shall be vested in a council, to consist of the president, vice-pre-Bident, treasurer and secretary, and twelve other members of the society.” “No persons other than members of tho society shall exhibit works at the exhibitions to bo held by the society.” In tho term “ members of the society ” in this last rule, of course, the three classes of members are included. At the close of tho meeting thirty-one gentlemen, including a number of the professional artists of Christchurch, enrolled their names as members. A meeting will bo called for next Thursday for electing a president, council, &0., as the business transacted last night was finished at too late an hour to admit of this being done.
