To-morrow the Government will call a meeting of their supporters in order to see if some arrangements can bo devised with regard to the amount and mode of reductions to be made in the estimates. AUCKLAND, July 2. Committals. Eichard Putnam has been committed for trial for forging an order purporting to be signed by Mr Harbutt, Brush Manufacturer, and instructing Powell, a boarding-house keeper to give the prisoner board and lodging for an indefinite period. Wm. Cook was also committed for trial for stealing a gold watch and chain and locket, value £22, from Ohas. Hunt, steward of the s.s. Taiaroa, at the regatta, INVERCARGILL, July 2. Death of the Boy Asher. The boy Asher, who was run over by the Bush Tramway locomotive on Wednesday, expired last night. His injuries were in the region of the groin. GasThe neighboring borough of Avenal has applied to the Invercargill Borough Council to be supplied with gas from the Corporation Gasworks. Municipal Endowments Bill. Mr Bain will move several amendments to the Municipal Endowments Bill, among them one providing that where recreation reserves join a borough, and are already vested in the Corporation, (he reserve shall be deemed part of the borough. Fire. Mr Hurley, a farmer near Gore, has had his stacks burned. They were insured. AUCKLAND, July 1. Vital StatisticsDuring June, there were twenty two deaths and forty-six births in the borough of Auckland. A Protest. At a public meeting held at Wangarei, a resolution was fpsssed protesting against the stoppage of the loop railway line. Criminal Sessions. Thore were twenty-three cases for trial at the criminal sessions on Monday. The Te Awamutu LineThe railway lino to Te Awamutu has been formally opened. A special train ran from Auckland with excursionists. Rewi was invited, but sent a friendly letter pleading illhealth as the cause of his non-attendance. NAPIER, July 1. New HospitalThe new Hospital was opened to-day. The building cost £4OOO, which has been defrayed by public subscription. The flames were extinguished by the neighbors, when one room was found saturated with kerosene. An insurance of £SO was effected about a month ago. WELLINGTON, Juno 30. A Narrow EscapeCaptain Dick, of the schooner Endeavor, which arrived this morning from Oamaru, 1 states that he narrowly escaped running 1 down a steamer (supposed to be the Stella) off Wellington Heads this morning. The Endeavor was standing towards ; Sinclair Hoads with a slrong breeze, when ‘ Captain Dick alleges the steamer attempted to ( cross his bows. The schooner was brought £ up in the wind, and a collision averted. Supreme Court Procedure. } The “Post” understands that it is the j intention of the Government to appoint a t Royal Commission to report on the Supreme I
Court system and practice, with a view to the simplification and cheapening of legal procedure. It is believed'that the Commission will comprise the five Judges of the Supreme Court, District Court Judges, Attorney and Solicitor-Generals, two Resident Magistrates, and six barristers of the Court, two to bo appointed by the Government, and the otherfour chosen by the Law Societies of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. The UnemployedA deputation of unemployed waited on the Premier this morning. Ho held out no hopes of giving employment near town. What he wished was to get them up country on the land. However, if the deputation would supply the Government with information as to the trades of tho unemployed, they would endeavor to get them employment on public works throughout the oolong at subsistence wages. Customs Revenue. The Customs revenue for the quarter amounts to £46,089. For the corresponding quarter in 1879 tho amount was £40.736. TIMARD, July 1. Timaru Wharf. At the Harbor Board to day the tender of Mr James Philp, of Timaru, at £2581, waa accepted, for the construction of the first length of the wharf inside tho breakwater.
