ST. PAUL’S CHURCH CONCERT.
In connection with the celebration of tho centenary of Sabbath schools, a sacred concert was held in. St. Paul’s Church lest evening, oh which occasion the building was crowded from ceiling to basement. Mr A. Landergar. acted as conductor, Mr K. T. Searrell as organist, and there was a chorus of about sixty voices. The programme contained selections from masterpieces of the most eminent claseicsl composers, including Handel, Gounod, Mendelssohn, Batiste and Haydn, all of which were rendered in a manner bespeaking careful rehearsal. The entertainment commenced by the audience standing up and singing the Old Hundredth, which was succeeded by the chorus “ And the glory of the Lord ” (“Messiah”), Mr Hobbs, whose name appeared in connection with the song “ Nazareth,” sent an apology for his absence on the ground of indisposition, and as a substitute Mr W. H. Rose eang “ Oh Lord, correct me.” The other items wore, chorus, “If with all your hearts” (“Last Judgment"); song, “He shall feed His flock” (“ Messiah”), Mrs Schmidt ; chorus, “ Holy, holy ” (“Athalie”); recitative air, “ Ye people rend your hearts,” “If with all your hearts” (“Elijah”), Mr T. H. Jones ; organ solo, “ Offurtoire in D,” Mr E. Searell; chorus, “ Glory to God ” (“ Vessiab”) ; solo, “Ho was despised” (“ Messiah”), Mrs Oorriek ; chorus, “Blessed are the men” (“Elijah”); song, Miss Button; chorus, “Gloria” (“First Mass”); solo, “But thou didst not leave” (“Messiah”}, Mrs Allan; chorus, “Hallelujah” (“Messiah”). There were frequent demonstrations of applause, and throughout the vocal and ins! tumental music was rendered with a high degree of excellence.
