CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

A regular meeting of the Charitable Aid Board was held at the Hospital yesterdayafternoon, when there were present Dr. Turnbull (in the chair) and Mr Hawkes. The hospital committee reported—During the past week nine patients have been admitted into ‘V; hospital, and forty-one discharged, leaving fifty-six patients in the institution. During the same period four deaths have occurred. The medical staff reported that Ames James Tudball, an inmate, had so far improved as to lender his further detention in the hospital •unnecessary. It was referred to Government. A letter was receivfidfrom Dr. Davis, house surgeon, in answer to a letter from the Board of Health, and was referred to the hospital committee. Before concluding the business, Mr Hawkes said—ln one of the evening papers there ■was an article published containing very severe strictures on the treatment of patients by nurses, and, as one of tho hospital committee, X took especial care to inquire into the matter. X find the whole thing is a fabrication from beginning to end, and it is a very great pity any paper should lend itself to making such charges without having something like reputable information on the subject. The occurrence referred to was this—A poor unfortunate girl was in extremes, in high delirium, and almost in her last moments, and the efforts made to keep her in her bed ware simply those needful for the sake of humanity. I think it is but just to the hospital attendants to state that the whole of the charges are totally unfounded. The Secretary also drew attention to a paragraph from the same source, and which asserted that the hospital returns furnished to newspapers did not enumerate the deaths in that institution. In contradiction thereof ho stated that tho number of deaths which took place wore always published.
