NEWS FROM THE CAFE.

[Br Tb£egba:ph.] [Per s.a. Rotomahana, at the Blnff. | CAPETOWN, May 24. A deputation of Boers has arrived at Capetown, with the object of going to England, to press on the Government the expediency ■ THstoring their independence in the Transvaal. They are hoping, now that Lord Beaconsfield's .administration is over, and Mr Gladstone in power, tfcat the latter will give their claims more favorable consideration. The deputation was much chagrined at hearing, on arrival in Capetown, that the present Government had officially intimated to Sir B. Frere that the Queen's sovereignty over the Transvaal must not be relinquished. A vote of censure against the Caps Ministry on the question of disarming the Baßutos was introduced into the Assembly, and caused the Government to modify their intentions by extending the period when fines for nondisarming should be inflicted. A painful sensation has been caused in South Africa by the loss of the steamer American. Among the passengers drowned was MrJohn Patterson, one of the most prominent politicians in the Cape colony. The mail steamer Kyneton will call at Teneriffe for news of the missing boats, and if nothing is heard there she will proceed to Sierra Leone. A portion of the mails by the American have been saved, but about ,£9OOO, chiefly silver, were lost. NATAL, May 17. The privacy bo urgently invoked _for_ the Empress Eugenie has been strictly maintained. During her progress throughout Natal the local press was respectfully silent as to the movements of the party. The route followed was well ehosen as regards the avoidance of obtrusion or observation.
