LIFE ASSURANCE.
Mr J. M. Templeton, secretary and: actuary of the ifational Mutnil lAfo Association of Australasia, delivered & lecture at the Oddfellows' Hall, last evening, on "The Theory of Life Asiuranoe." The Rev. H. O. M. Wateon presided, and there was a fair attendance of the public. The leeturer first addressed himself to the general principles—theory of probabilities; what is a table of mortality ? -wherein does life assurance differ from fire, marine, and other kinds of insurance ? calculation of premiums ; compound interest; what is mutual assurance ? necessity of periodical investigations; what is an actuarial investigation ? what is meant by the value of a policy ? surrender values indefeasible policies; proof of age; and then more especially to the extra advantages of the association which he represented. The National Mutual offered peculiar advantages with regard to surrender values ; lives were taken at the age nearest birthday, and not, as is the common practice, on the birthday after date ; and there was a special regulation with regard to "loaded lives" which conferred benefits not generally to be obtained. The society divides its profits every three years, and being a local institution, all funds are invested in the colony. The lecturer, in a concise and clear manner, illustrated his remarks by diagrams, and appeared to make himself thoroughly understood by his hearers.
