Returns on this subject have been presented in compliance wilh an order of the House of Commons. The number of bushels of malt charged with duty in the year 1878 in England was 52,210,214, the amount of duty charged thereon being £7,081,010; in 1879 the number of bushels charged with duty was 46,009,872, and the duty £6,240,088. In Scotland the amount of duty was, in 1878, £423,646; in 1879, £362,020. In Ireland, in 1878, the duty was £462,855 ; in 1879, £392,151. The total for the United Kingdom shows, in 1878, 58,752,934 bushels, with £7,967,512 duty; while in 1879 the quantity was 51,576,890 bushels, and the duty £6,994,259. An account of the quantities of barley imported into the United Kingdom in the years 1878 and 1879 shows that in 1878 the quantity so imported was 14,156,919 cwt,, equivalent in quarters to 3,963,937 ; while in 1879 the quantity was 11,546,3140 wt., equivalent to 3,232,968 quarters. TEMUKA MECHANICS’ INSTITUTE. The regular monthly committee meeting of the above was held in the reading room on Friday, June 11th. Resolved—“ That the £SO fixed deposit at present in the bank be refunded for another six months.” Resolved —“That Mr McKay be authorised to arrange with Mr Armstrong for the delivery of a lecture at an early date, in aid of the funds of the institute.” Attention was drawn to the fact that some person or persons were in the habit of abstracting papers from the reading table. The librarian was instructed to stamp all papers immediately on receipt, in order to enable the stolen property to be more readily identified.
