Judge Williams has held that Mr Watts's assumption that he had power to take judicial notice of the city by-law without proving the same wei erroneous, and quashed the conviction in the appeal case, allowing costs against the Inspector of Nuisances. The Licensing Bench* Mr Downie Stewart's action re the wooden buildings is greatly approved of, the publicans here, even the owners of stone and brick hotels, concurring that the action of the Invercargill Bench threatening to close wooden houses next year is tyrannical, arbitrary and a stretch of power. At the Compensation Court, in the caso of Kircaldie and Stains and the GeneraVGovernment, judgment was given for the plaintiffs for £4853, and fifty guineas costs. The claim was for £5750, the value of land taken by the defendants for the new railway station. The Licensing Act. The Hannah Mokau, over which there has been so much squabbling, is to be sold by order of the mortgagee. A Remittance Man in TroubleLawrence H. Jellings, committed for trial in Hamilton for forging and uttering a cheque for £63 on the Colonial Bank, was acquitted lately at the Supreme Court sessions on a similar charge. Jellings is connected with a wealthy family at home, and received regular remittances. Grass Seeds. Mr James Farmer has forwarded to Auckland Museum from London a case containing fifty different species of grasses suitable for arable land. NAPIER, June 8. The Bible in Schools. A meeting was held last night for the purpose of securing the reading of the Bible in public schools. The Bishop \o£ Waiapu presided, and Bevs. St. Hill, Spear, Hovel, and Penny were present. It was resolved to present a petition to Parliament, pricing that the Bible may be read without note or comlient in schools. A committee was appointed to get the petition signed, which will be forwarded for presentation to the local members. A counter-petition is going to be got up. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 8. New Plymouth Harbour. At a meeting of the Harbor Board this afternoon, Mr Bees made a report on his mission to England, and what he had done was approved. The plans of Sir John Ooode were also adopted, and recommended for the Governor's approval. WELLINGTON, June 8. A Bellman Killed. A man named Con. Croft, the well-known bellman, was killed this aftemoca [by a runaway horse. The Government LibrarianMr Ewen McColl, Government librarian,, received a severe streke of paralysis this afternoon. WESTPOBT, June 8. A False ReportThe report that the colliery had received serious injury is incorrect. The only foundation for the report is that a truck broke away last week and displaced a few sleepers. DUNEDTN, June 8. Greymouth Wallsend CoThe Greymouth Wallsend Colliery Company here have registered under the JointStock Companies Act, and directors have been appointed. Tenders will be immediately called for to put the mine in thorough working order.
