MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday, June 2.
[Before G. L. Mellish, Esq , B M., and J. E. Parker, Esq. J P J Deitnk and Disokdebly. Margare Guerin, just out of gaol, and against whom there are numerous former convictions, was fined 40s. Peter Kelly and Mary Edwards, lined 10s each. Bailing to Pbovidb. —Frederick Lane was brought up on warrant, charged with not providing for the support of his family. His wife proved his habitual drunkenness and neglect. Accused said both parties were willing to separate. The case was allowed to stand over for a fortnight, to give time for an arrangement to be come to. His Worship said if the accused was brought up again on a similar oh uge again, he would certain y gst six months’ imprisonment. Neglected Child. Wm. Balph was brought up, on remand from Monday last. The police stated that the accused, a boy aged about twelve and small for his age, had been committed to Oaversham Industrial School in 1871 for seven years and re committed in 1878 for six years. He was apprenticed to his stepfather in April List for four years, to be kept within the jurisdiction of the school; his stepfather is now in Christchurch. John Home said the boy, his stepson, came to Christchurch from the South with him. He had attended school, but was expelled for dishonesty ; he afterwards said he had got a situation, and absented himself from home since Friday last. Ho was a bad boy and almost beyond control. The Bench spoke severely as to the carelessness of tho stepfather in allowing the boj to run wild. The case was remanded until further communication has been made with the Dunedin Industrial School authorities. Disobeying an Cedes of Court.—C. W. Thompkina was charged with neglecting to contribute 25s per week to the support of his family as ordered by the Court. Mrs Thompkins said she had received nothing from her husband since the previous award of tho Magistrates. Ho had sold the furniture of their house, and appeared to be doing nothing in the shape of work. The accused pleaded his inability to got work. His Worship said from his own knowledge he knew this to be a most heartless case. The accused seemed to bo incorrigible. He would bo mode to work for a short time whether ho liked it or not. Sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Labceny. —The case against Mary Brooks for this offence was postponed sine die on account of the illness of the accused.
