HEATHCOTE TOTAL ABSTINENCE SOCIETY.
Tho second anniversary of tho above society was celebrated in the district schoolroom on Thursday evening last. Mr A. C. Newton, B.A., occupied the chair. A temperance service of song, entitled “Bart’s Joy,” formed the first part of the programme. This was capitally rendered by a number of the juvenile members, under the leadership of Mr Kent, the connective readings being given by the Rev. Mr Beck, of Lyttelton. The Secretary, Mr A. Martin, then gave the annual report of the position of the society, from which it appeared that the number of members on the roll amounted to nearly eighty. A recitation by one of the members and a temperance song by a Christchurch lady followed, and were well received, after which addresses were delivered by Messrs J. T. Smith and C. M. Gray, the former confining his remarks to the juvenile, and the latter to the physiological, aspect of the temperance question. Mr Gray's advocacy of the formation of a Good Templar Lodge at the Valley was heartily approved of, and it is expected that a lodge will be shortly instituted there. The proceedings terminated with a distribution of beautifully illustrated cards, the gift of Mrs Newton to the members.
