Rbqina r, Maeit3.—This case has so far terminated in tue ii fliction of a fine of 5s on the accused. It ie by no means probable, however, that we have heard the last of it. It appears that under Mr Meliish’s view of the law he has power to inflict the fine, and in default of payment may order distraint to bo made; but if this cannot bo satisfied, the subsequent proceedings are not at all certain. It is here wnero the trouble about the stocks comes in. Whether for punishment of the present or future offender a special instrument of that kind will have to be procured, or whether some other penalty may be substituted, is loft open to future elimination. Mr Molliah did not say ho thought it likely that stocks would be set up in the market-place, or anywhere else, but of course such u result, under the law, is possible, and may properly be held in terrorem over he heads of such persons as Wicked Marks. A point worthy ot notice in these proceedings is their exceeding cheapness. It was stated in Court this morning that the costs amounted to two shillings. Mr Joynt, the counsel for the prosecution, said ho would not ask for costs on this occasion, but in any similar case he would not be so generous. The learned gentlemen evidently scent the battle from afar.

Mr Otley informed the meeting that ho had seen the chairman of the Hoathcote Hoad Board with reference to having tho street formed and made over, but as there were so many difficulties in the way ho proposed that the matter be left in abeyance. This view was also taken by those present, and the proposition carried. After a vote of thanks to those persons who had interested themselves in tho matter, the meeting lapsed. A Loss of Abt. Raphael died without knowing tho rapture it is to catch the expression on the face of a man who chases a street car three blocks, and then, just before he makes the jump for the step, pulls up suddenly and geos back to the side walk, trying to look as though ho hadn’t just discovered that he hadn’t a solitary, lingering red cent, about bin clothes.
Venturin' Cruelty to Animals. —A coloured drayman, who was trying to haul more freight than his mule co.ild well draw up the slippery wharf, spoke in this manner—- “ Look here, mule 1 you needn’t think ’cause you's got a sioty hero in Helena for venturin’ cruelty to uniinulos dat you can fool wid die nigger when I’a in a hurry.
