ROBBING A COMRADE.
Some time since a young man of gentlemanly appearance, named Edward Francis Graves, was arretted in Christchurch on an extradition warrant charging him with larceny of several articles of clothing and several sums in notes and gold, amounting in the aggregate to about £2CO. It appeared that he arrived in "Victoria by the steamer Somersetshire, and on the passage contracted a friendship with a young gentleman named William Tennent Cole, who was in good circumßtanoes. They lived together at the same hotel, the London Tavern, in Sandridge, and were very intimate. Mr Oole, being called away to Adelaide, gave his friend £6 to pay his score at the hotel, and requested him to get his portmanteau, which contained a considerable sum of money, and follow him to Adelaide. Instead of carrying out these instructions, Graves got the traps and money, with which he levanted. On returning, Mr Oole found that his friend had played him false, and put the affair in the hands of the police, through whose agency it was discovered that he had come to New Zealand, and an extradition warrant was issued, on which Graves was arrested in Ohrietchurch, and remanded to Sandridge. A recent exchange states that Edward Francis Graves was tried at the Sandride" Police Court and sentenced to six months' imprisonment, which, by the way, is a very light sentence compared with those imposed in this colony for similar offences.
