Passengers—For Dunedin: Mrs Craig and child. Mr Blanchard. For Bluff: Miaa Gillen. For Melbourne: Mr Fullarton. For Hobart Town: Mrs Thompson, Mr and Mrs Hewitt, Mr Eoper, Mr Archer. Steerage : 11. Sailed —May 26. Beils, barque, 341 tons, Burch, for Adelaide. C. W. Turner, agent. 5 5 Messrs Eoyse, Stead and Co. to-day received a telegram from Napier, advising arrival of the schooner Aspasia, from Lyttelton, after an unusually stormy passage. It was fouud_ necessary to jettison a portion of the cargo, to insure the safety of the vessel, bat to what extent this was done is not advised. The schooner Saxon, from Auckland, via Wellington, is expected here. Her cargo for this port consists of 350 pkgs sashes and 700 d*ors. The Sydney “ Evening News of a late date says :—“Last evening the officers of the E. and A. Company's R.M.S. Brisbane met in the saloon of that steamer to present second officer J. C. Arthur and quarter-master J. E. Torney, the former with a handsome gold watch, bearing an inscription, and gold albert chain, the latter with a gold albert and medal, also suitably inscribed, in recognition of the very dangerous services so willingly undertaken upon the occasion of the grounding of the Brisbane upon an unknown reef in the Aratura Sea on the evening of January 11th last. On the 14th, as there appeared to be no likelihood of the steamer floating off until next spring tides, No. 3 lifeboat, in charge of Mr Arthur, was despatched to Pori Darwin to report the accident and procure assistance from Sydney. The steamer floated off the reef during the next night, and immediately started in pursuit of the lifeboat, which was picked up at 2.24 a.m. on the 15th. The passengers on board presented Mr Arthur with the following address upon the arrival of tlm Brisbane at Singapore : ‘ Singapore, January 23rd, ISSO Dear Sir,—We, the undersigned passengers by the E.M. steamer Brisbane, from Sydney to Singapore, wish to take this opportunity of thanking yon and your boat’s crew for the very willing and courageous manner in which you undertook, at the risk c>f your own lives, to reach Port Darwin, a distance of 400 miles, in an open boat, and during a string north east monsoon, in order to get us the assistance we so much needed when grounded on a reef on the evening of Sunday, the 11th instant. Wishing you a happy and prosperous career, we sign ourselves— Francis Henry, George B. Hingley, David S. Caleron, W. Waenzll Denton, Henry Wekker. Mr J. C. Arthur, second officer R.M.S. Brisbane/ M Mr J. C. Arthur is well known on this coast, having been for a long time one of the officers in the service of the Union Steamship Company. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. RtrsssLii, May 26. Tho Rotomahana arrived here at 7.30 p.m. yesterday. She brings 81 passengers and 641 tons of cargo. She left Sydney on the 21st instant.
