Accidental DeathInformation was received in town, this evening that a man named James Gilchrist, engineer, of Wellington, was accidentally shot dead at the Upper Hutt, this afternoon. It is not yet known how the accident occurred, but it is supposed that the gun of Mr Baymond Johnson, who was with him, suddenly exploded, and shot deceased. Volunteer Review. The volunteers held a review this morning. There were about 490 volunteers and 500 spectators present, and everything passed off smoothly. Racing. The races at Lyell's Bay were well attended. Mata won the Birthday Cup. A Dangerous Raft. Captain Flowerday, of the steamer St. Kilda, reports to the Marine Department that he saw a raft of timber 15ft by 15ft, two feet deep, at Separation Point, bearing W.S.W., ten miles distant, which might be dangerous to shipping. "Wreck of a Retch. The Secretary of the Marine Department has received a telegram from the Harbor Master at Sydney, that yesterday the ketch Fanny Thornton, 80 tons, O. Barney, master, with a full cargo of sawn timber, was wrecked just outside the South Head. The crew were saved. OAMABT7, May 24. Volunteer ReviewThe Volunteer review to-day was one of the finest ever held in this district. There were 1500 spectators present. Major Sumpter read General Davidson's report, which spoke of the corps as having satisfactorily undergone the inspection.
