VITAL STATISTICS.

[By Thleqbauh.J WELLINGTON, May 20. The following are the vital statistics for the month of April, 1880 :

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 510, against 489 in March, being an increase of 21. The deaths amounted to 173 in April, a decrease of 36 on the number in March. Of the above deaths, males contributed 94, and females 85. Ninety of the deaths were those of children under five years, being 50 28 per cent, of the whole number. Sixty-seven of these children were under one year of age. THE ÜBSO CONCERTS. The second of these delightful entertainments was given at the Oddfellows’ Hall last night to a most enthusiastic audience. Indeed, there was but one opinion expressed on all sides, and that was to the effect that hitherto sola violinists have created admiration at their efforts, and have surprised many by their powers of execution, but have never succeeded in holding an audience spellbound by the power of sound as Madame Urso does. Hearing this inspired artiste is like a delicious dream, criticism is impossible, and any endeavor to recapitulate the technical difficulties utilised is almost equally futile. Madame Urso’s performances last evening consisted of Ernst’s Fantasie on the March and Romanza from “ Otello,” which was a display of extraordinary ability and also a treat of the highest order. Ernst is as a composer beyond the reach of any but the moat highly gifted, and to have one of his choicest morceaux laid before us by such a master hand as Madame Urso’s, places us under a deep obligation. As an encore she played a souvenir of Haydn in her inimitable style. The piece de retittance, however, was the air from Bach’s “ Suite’’ in D, for the G string only, a selection displaying the quality of tone at the artist’s command, and more especially the power of expression and sostenuto which she possesses. In Madame Urso’s hands the violin almost creates a doubt whether after all the human voice is the moat expressive instrument, a doubt strengthened by her subsequent performances Gottschalk’s cradle song (dedicated to Madame Urso), and the “ Old Folks at Home,” the result of a third recall. Taborowski’s “Waltz de Salon ” offered a contrast to the above numbers by its brilliancy of execution. Of the remaining members of the company, all increased the favorable impression created on their first appearance. Signora Palma, who was in better voice, received an encore for the aria “ Ah man fils,” from the “ The Prophet,” and substituted “ The Lady of the Lea ” ; and, in the second part, gave “ Non e Ver ” very effectively, and, as an encore, “At the ferry,” by Mielling. Miss Jennie Sargent sang the prayer and barcarolle from the “ Star of the North ” admirably, and also “The Angel’s Whisper,” by Braga, in which she was assisted by Madame Urso, who played the violin obligato exquisitely. As encores she gave “Thoßhine Maiden” and “Spring Song.” Mr Auguste Sauret strengthened the good opinion he created the previous evening by his rendering of Rubensteiu’s “ Tarantelle,” and on being recalled pave Chopin’s Nocturne in B flat minor with artistic expression. In the second part, a Caprice by Espinosa and Liszt’s “ Nightingale ” were also rendered by him to the entire satisfaction of the audience. The programme concluded with the wellknown duet from the first act of “ Martha," which received full justice at the hands of MLs Jennie Sargent and Signora Palma. For to-morrow, Madame Urso announces Wieniawski’s grand fantasie on “Faust” and Paganini’s prayer from Moe<3 ” for the G itring only.
