CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock. Present—Mr Thomson (chairman), the Mayor of Sydenham, Mr Booth, the Mayor of Christchuroh, and Mr Hawkes. The Hospital committee reported that during the past fortnight thirty-three patients had been admitted into the Hospital and twenty-teven discharged, leaving eighty-nine patients at present in the institution. During the same period four deaths occurred. The committee recommended that the wooden bath now standing useless be given to the Refuge, and that a small iron boiler, also not required at the Hospital, be Bold to them ac a nominal charge. The report was adopted. A letter was read from the House Steward, informing the Board that the Domain Board had accorded tho required permission for removal of treea referred to in his last report; also suggesting that a shed should be erected lor the accommodation of horseß and vehicles belonging to the medical staff in hot or inclement weather, the members ef the staff having called his attention to the necessity for some such accommodation. A plan of a shed suitable for the purpose referred to in Mr Bell's report was submitted. The Board decided to erect the shed, and the report of the house Bteward was approved. A letter was read from Dr. Irving, secretary to the medical staff, in reference to the prisoner, Amoß J. Tudball, and the Board resolved to Bend a copy thereof to Mr Bamford. The orphanage committee reported as follows: — That having visited the institution on the 7th ust., and having thoroughly inspected the uilding, it decided to send the following telegram to the Hon. the Colonial Secretary :»- " Fresh cases of diphtheria having broken out at the Orphanage since return of children from Quail Island, committee have inspected building and work previously done there, and are of opinion that the whole of the asphalt, bota in front and back of the bnildingß is too high, as at present it i-> impossible for any current of air to pass under the building. The floor in several places ha 3 been taken up, and the ground underneath was quite eoaked with water, and emitted unhealthy odours. The committee suggest that district engineer should be requested to confer with them, and see that necessary work be immediately cairied out." Accordingly on Monday, the Jo:h inst., the committee, in company with the disirict e igineer and Mr Hurrell, Inspect or of Works, again visited the institution, The district engineer has recommended that improvements should at once be carried out, and is now waiting a reply from Wellington. The report was ordered to be received, awaiting a reply from the Government. This concluded the ordinary business. The Board then proceeded to the consideration of the proposed New Hospital and Charitable Institution Bill, for which purpose they went into committee, and on resuming adjourned. __________________
