LYTTELTON COLONISTS’ SOCIETY.

A special meeting of the committee of this society was held at their hall on Monday night to consider what steps should be taken in reference to the recent rejection by the borough of the committee’s offer to make over the Colonists’ Hall and library to the town. Under the by-laws of the society it was found that no provision was made whereby the committee could, under existing circumstances, resign without leaving successors in charge. The present committee had at a previous meeting resolved that in the event of their proposal being declined they would at once retire from the management, so as to afford those of the members who had expressed themselves willing to carry on the institution in its present form an opportunity of doing so. This they now said they were anxious to do, and it was suggested that as there were six vacancies in the committee these should be filled by the remaining members electing that number of gentlemen from among those who had opposed the committee’s proposal. Ultimately it was agreed that a letter be sent to Mr H. N. Nalder, as representing the anti-free library members, asking him to name six members to fill the vacancies, a course which if followed would enable the present committee to retire. The committee then adjourned, to meet again on Friday evening next.
