ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At ameeting of the above Council, held last Monday evening, the Mayor stated that for the first time ha had to announce that there was a sum of £342 to the credit of the Council. A deputation from the fire brigade urged that the Council had promised to pay £SO a year towards the support of the brigade, and also to provide a uniform for them, On the strength of this the brigade had obtained a uniform, but had not pressed the Council for money until now, when they were xn funds. The Mayor said the sum of £25 was due, but deprecated the action of the brigade in sending to England for uniforms without consulting tho Council. Had the brigade left the matter in the hands of the Council things would have been much better. Tho deputation then withdrew. Tho engineer reported that fair progress was being made with the water supply contract, and that Mr Wilkie would have the work finished soon. On the motion of Or. Saunders the Mayor, Ors. St. Hill, Bullock, and the mover were appointed a committee to consider the advisability of disposing of the water pipes. Messrs Saunders Brothers wrote, stating that the water supply to tho town would interfere with the working of their mill, and asked that a deed should be drawn up giving them a preferential claim to the water, if ever it ran short. The request was deemed reasonable, and it was resolved to instruct the Council’s solicitor to draft such a deed as would be approved by Messrs Saunders Brothers’ solicitor. After some conversation with regard to making concrete channels in anticipation of the water supply, it was resolved to call for tenders for from 100 to 200 casks of cement. Some business of a minor importance having bean transacted, the Council adjourned.
