THE RACE, Thanks to the delay caused by the parade it was some few minutes past the hour appointed befcro the twenty • five runners reached the post, though they had all left the paddock in excellent time, all the weighing preliminaries having been discharged fully half an hour before the time fixed for the race. Almost directly the flag foil Concord, Othello and Elf King broke away, and a second attempt was frustrated by the anxiety of Othello to ha at work. At the third attempt, however, the signal was given and an excellent start effected. At this moment tho positions of tho various competitors were as follows:—On the loft were Whito Poppy, Martivalle, Othello, Eriar Sush, Quicksilver, and Fanfare, in the centre Sun of York, Tower and Sword, Eagman, Lincolnshire, Sunburn, Vegetarian and Horizon, and on the right were Midlothian, Wallenstein, Elf King, Placida, Eosy Cross, Chocolate, Sarsaparilla, Bri=lia and Concord, of whom the last named crossed over to the other side soon after the flag foil. The first to break the line was Midlothian, who went away at score and led the field a merry dance for two hundred yards, when he lost his place, and Tower and Sword in the centre showed in front of Concord, Sun of York and Dunmow, these forming the first rank from Vegetarian, who had for his immediate attendants Sarsaparilla, Horizon, Eosy Gross, Elf King, Fiddlcstring, Midlothian, Placida, and Sunburn. Then came Othello, Briglia, Fanfare and Eagman, with the others in close attendance for nearly a quarter of a mile, whore a long tail began to bo formed. But little change was observed in the leading division until coming on to the old ground, when Tower and Sword was passed by Concord, who came on at a great pace from Col. Forester’s horse. Horizon and Eosy Cross, with Elf King next, in advance of Placida, Briglia and Sunburn, while Sun of York, Dunmow, Vegetarian, Fiddlestriag, and Midlothian were all in trouble, and virtually took no further part in the struggle. As they came into the rails, or in other words rather better than a quarter of a mile from homo, Eosy Cross, without any apparent effort, assumed the command, Elt' King coming on second from Concord, Tower, and Sword, Horizon and Sarsaparilla, with Placida at the head of the others* of whom Briglia and Vegetarian were most prominent. Tho severity of the pace began to tell its tale on Elf King and Horizon before the distance was reached, and with Concord and Tower and Sword also in trouble Eosy Cross was loft with about three lengths lead of Placida. The latter gradually crept up, however, and opposite the stand made a desperate effort to get up on tho rails, but failing in her attempt, finally suffered defeat after a good race by a “ short length.” Two lengths separated the second and third, Horizon was fourth, closely followed by Briglia, fifth, and Concord sixth; Vegetarian was seventh, Tower and Sword eighth, Fiddlestring, Sun of York and Lincolnshire next, and the last quartett comprised Friar Eush, Othello, Fanfare and White_ Poppy. Time, by Benson’s chronograph, Imin 47secs. Value of the stakes, £1763. Parole came in first for the Liverpool Spring Cup half a length in front of Advance, hut was afterwards objected to the ground of a cross. The protest being sustained by the stewards they disqualified the American, and awarded the race to Advance. Bhocklesbt Stakes of 300 sovs., added to a Sweepstake of 10 sovs. each, for two-year-olds ; 5 furlongs. Mr H. Chaplain’s ch f by Hermit —Vaga, Bst 91bs (H. Jeffery) 1 Sir 6. Chetwynd’s Althotas, Bst 121 b (O. Wood) 2 Mr C. J. Lefevro’s Colonnade, Sat 91b (F. Archer) 3 Select, Lord Dnpplin’s b o by King of the Forest—Fright, f by Carnival—Cauldron, King of Scotland, Crawley, b c by Orest—Cremona, Bruar, Wild Stag, Alone, Lady Andrea, Pilgrim, Heristal, Old Salt, Talmonso, also ran. Betting : 5 to 1 agst Cotonnado, 8 to 1 each Bruar and the Fright colt, 10 to X Althotas, 100 to 7 each Alone, Pilgrim, tho Yaga filly, and the Cauldron filly, and 20 to 1 each Heristal, Old Salt, Wildstag, Talmouse, and the Cremona colt.
At tho second attempt they quitted the post nearly in a line, but, after running a hundred yards, the Cremona colt drew out in the centre of the course, and made play, with a slight advantage of Talmouse, Colonnade, and Wild Stag on his left; while, on the opposite side, was seen the colours of King of Scotland, Alone, Althotas, the Yaga filly, the Fright colt, and the Cauldron filly. They retained these positions for a furlong, when the favourite loot her place and appeared to be outpaced, and as they approached the new ground, which was exceedingly heavy, the leading division closed and drew towards the rails on the right, and for a brief period fears were entertained that a collision would take place, but fortunately such was not the case, and as they entered the rails Wild Stag and King of Scotland were beaten, and the Cremona colt then joined Talmouse, the pair coming on side by side, being followed by the favorite, clear of Althotas and the Vega filly to the distance. Hera tho Cremona colt was boaton, leaving Talmouse with the lead, which he retained to the commencement of the stand inolosure, when he was challenged by the Yaga filly and Althotas on either side. The Frenchman was immediately after beaten, and his place was taken by Colonnade, but the latter was never enabled to reach the two leaders, who finished u slashing race home, the Yaga colt, who ran tho longest, winning by a head ; three lengths between second and third; the Cremona colt was fourth, the Cauldron filly fifth, Alone sixth, the Fright colt seventh, and Old Salt next, with King of Scotland at tho head of the remainder, who were whipped in by Crawley and Lady Andrea Time, Imin. 15seo.
