BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.
The Board of Conservators for South Waimakariri held a meeting this morning. There were present—Mr R. J. 8. Harman (chairman), Mr Tosswill, and Mr O’Callaghan. The Chairman informed the Board that the auditors were still engaged with the accounts, but bad expressed themselves satisfied that they were correct. He also remarked that in consequence of the published report of last month’s meeting, an oiler for £3OOO of debentures at 9 per cent, had been made. He had not, therefore, considered it necessary to advertise ; but the matter was now in the hands of the Board The Board resolved to invito tenders for £6OOO worth of debentures, to bo taken up on the terms as to currency and rate of interest fixed at the meeting on the 13th April last. It was also resolved that the Mayor of Christchurch and the chairman bo authorised to accept or reject any offers which may come in, and that the chairman, with the Mayor of Christchurch or Mr Duncan, be authorised to affix theßoard’s seal to any debentures issued in accordance with the above terms. In reference to an application from the Courtenay Road Board, dated 19th Apiil, 1830, with respect to the sale of the immigrants’ cottage and pound on Reserve No. 1052, the chairman was authorised to agree generally to the Board s request, provided a reasonable road frontage was left to the Board of Conservators. A letter was road from the Sydenham Borough Council, stating their opinion that in a Bill proposed to bo introduced to Parliament, providing for an elective Board of Conservators, the Borough of Sydenham was entitled to two members. The Chairman said the Board had not initiated the movement referred to. It was resolved—“ That the chairman be requested to reply to the above letter, to the effect that the Board had no knowledge of any steps being taken to introduce a Bill providing for an elective Board of Conservators, and that the question was one rather for the consideration of the ratepayers than the Board.” In reference to the protective works the Chairman said he had gone over the works, and was of opinion that the work proposed by the overseer was necessary. The question raised elicited considerable discussion, and ultimately the _ chairman was requested to call a special meeting, on Wednesday, 26th inst., to consider the question of further works for the protection of No 1 bank. The chairman was granted a planting inpress of £SO.
The original appointment of tho overseer (his six months probation having expired) was confirmed.
Accounts were passed for payment, and the Board then adjourned.
