MELBOURNE EXHIBITION.

The usual weekly meeting of the local committee was held yesterday at 2.30 p.m. Present—Messrs 0. W. Turner, Cunningham, Beaumont, W. D. Wood, L. E. Nathan, R. Allan, G. G. Stead, J. A. Bird (hon. sec.), and Hon. J. T. Peacock. Mr Stead occupied the chair. The secretary' said that he had written to the various gentlemen mentioned by Dr. Turnbull as likely to help with regard to obtaining specimens of minerals, but had not yet received any answer. A letter was road from the secretary of the General Commission at Wellington, stating that he understood that the regulations of the exhibition were the same as regarded forwarding of prices by the exhibitors as in connection with the Sydney Exhibition. There was no direct statement on the regulations whether the value of articles will bo taken into consideration by the judges, but the secretary quoted a clause in the instructions to judges -which he thought inferred so much. The latest date for receiving exhibits at the Exhibition Building, Melbourne, was stated as being 31st August, no concession being made for green hams, &o. The names of Canterbury exhibitors who had requested their exhibits to bo forwarded to Melbourne, were : Canterbury Marble Company, Lyttelton Harbor Board, T. H. Potts, and W. Tombs. A further letter from the Commission stated that space for all exhibits, whether from the Sydney Exhibition or New Zealand direct, would have to be applied for in the ordinary way. The date for receiving applications for space from the local committees by the Melbourne committee was stated as being Juno Ist. The Secretary said that the following applications for space had been received: — Glass-making oand, marble, &c., papier mache manufactured from New Zealand Hax, J. B. Stansell; wheat, oats, barley, and peas, Cunningham and Oo.; grass seed (rye and cocksfoot), B. Wilkin and Oo.; flax, rope, twine, dressed flax and tow, James Deed ; watorcolor views, Akuroa, &c., W. M. N. Watkins; chicory, coffee, spices, popper, malt, &c., Trent Bros. ; oil painting, John Gibb; blankets, flannels, tweeds, yarns, &e., Kaiapoi Woollen Factory ; bottled ale, stout, &0., Crown Brewery Company; boots and shoes, George Hyde ; New Zealand chalk (found at Oxford), Ingram and White. Mr Beaumont said that he had seen Mr Watt as regarded the sending over of some bans and bacon, and ho bad declined to send in, as the Melbourne and Sydney exhibitors would have all the best of it by sending in their exhibits soy a week before the exhibition opening, while the New Zealand exhibits were obliged to be sent some long time previous. After 20m3 discussion, it wan resolved that the secretary write to Dr. Hector pointing out that the Now Zealand exhibitors of hams and bacon, &c., v/ero placed at a great disadvantage as compared with the Melbourne and Sydney exhibitors. The various sub-committees handed in their reports. . As regarded jewellery, Ac., Mr Cunningham pointed out that the jewellers wished to know when the Canterbury exhibits sent to Sydney would be returned, as they desired to ro-

arrange them, &o. It was resolved that tho local committee communicate with tho Sydney Commission,

requesting the return of the Canterbury exhibits at the Sydney Exhibition at us early a date as possible. Mr W. D. Wood stated that some exhibits of pottery goods, stone, &e., would come forward. The Chairman pointed out that a great deal might be done by members of the committee personally seeing intending exhibitors, and getting them to send specimens of their workmanship and productions. He would telegraph to Sydney asking for the return of their exhibits at once. The meeting then adjourned.
