PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the members of the Philosophical Institute was hold last- night, Mr E. Dobson, the president, in the chair. There were about twenty members present. Mr N. K Oherrill was appointed a member of the Council, to fill the vacancy caused by the appointment of Mr Q-. Gray as hon. secretary. Mr W. M. Maskell gave notice of motion for the next meeting—" That the Council be requested to make arrangements for having condensed reports of discussions on papers read beforo the Institute inserted in the minutes, so that they may appear in tho transactions of the New Zealand Institute, io. the same way as those of other affiliated societies." The following papers were takon as read, the writers giving a digest of thoir contents :—" On tho Hymenoptora of New Zealand," by Professor Hutton ; " On tho causes which tend to alter the eccentricity of Planetary Orbits," by Profensor Bickerton. Mr Lambert exhibited some mineral specimens which he had collected during his recent visit to tho Kuikouras. An animated discussion took place on tho papers, in which a great many of the members took part. This terminated tho proceedings.
