GASOLINE.

Since the removal of the prohibition by the insurance companies of the use cf gasoline, except under modified instructions, for lighting public buildings, it is expected that this improved system of lighting will bo very largely adopted both bv public bodies and private individuals whero ordinary gas is not available. Duriig last week the Club Hotel, at Rangiora, was successfully lighted by this gas. A machine has been erected for Mr Wilson at the hotel, by Mr Richard Smith, who is the representative of the Alpha Gasoline Machine Company, which will supply twenty-five burners. The dining-room, in which two crystal three light chandeliers have been erected, is much improved, while the gasoline lights in the hall, bar, sitting and smoking rooms, are also a decided improvement on the former mode of lighting. Mr Smith has been asked to give estimates for the Kaiapoi Woollen Factory and the Rangiora parish church. The cost of the gasoline light is 11s per 1000 ft., as compared with coal gas at 14s 2d, the price at which the latter is supplied in the city. Where the gasoline is introduced, the machines have to be placed 30ft. from dwellings and other buildings, and an endorsement is made on fire policies in which its use is permitted.
