SABBATH OBSERVANCE.
A meeting of persons interested in the question of Sabbath observance took place yesterday afternoon in the rooms of the Young Men’s Christian Association, Mr J. H. Twentyman in the chair. There were about twenty persons preset. The Chairman, after reporting what had been done since the last meeting, stated that Mr Ballantyne had handed him £lO towards defraying the expenses of the movement. A deputation from the Sunday School Union waited on the committee, and Mr Ross, one of the delegates, stated that the body would render every assistance in their power te the committee to prevent Sunday trading. Mr Dundas moved—“ That at a duly convened meeting of ministers and laymen to consider the question of Sunday trading in this city, it was resolved that a memorial be presented to the City Council by a deputation appointed for that purpose, setting forth the desirability of taking steps to preserve from desecration the Lord’s Day by trading, and to state that the meeting would afford every help within its power in support of a proposed application to the City Council for legislation on the subject.” Mr Staples seconded the motion, which was unanimously carried. On the motion of Mr Dawson, seconded by the Rev. A. Reid, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the committee for the manner in which they had carried out the wishes of the late meeting. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Staples, seconded by the Rev. Mr Rishworth—“Thatjche former sub-committee form a deputation to wait on the City Council.” Mr Cameron moved, and Mr Dawson seconded—“ That this meeting adjourn sine die, the secretary and chairman having power to call another meeting when necessary.” The proceedings terminated with the Benediction, pronounced by the Rev, A. Reid.
