The New Thorndon School.
The now Thorndon school was opened this afternoon by His Excellency, who made a long and interesting ' speech. Ho congratulated the committee on the state of the school, and advocated the reading of the Bible in schools. HOKITIKA, May 3. Railway CommissionThe Railway Commissioners arrived here on Sunday evening, by special coach from Canterbury. They sat at 10 o’clock this morning. It transpired from the evidence given by Mr Miller, chief surveyor, that a new route over the Whitcombe Pass has been discovered, which is about twenty-five miles shorter than any route yet known between the East and West coasts. Mr Roberta, surveyor, who has lately been over the pass, has reported the particulars to the chief surveyor, who has likewise communicated the information to the head department in Wellington. The Railway Commissioners left for Kumara and Q-rey this afternoon. They intend travelling overland to Nelson. OAMARU, May 3. The Waikato SeatThe candidates who will stand for the General Assembly are Messrs Sutherland, Roberts and Reid. There are many rumours of others coming forward, but they are without foundation. The contest is thought to lie between Mr Sutherland and Mr Roberts. A Slight AccidentAn accident happened to the Duntroon train on Saturday evening at Uxbridgo. The station is on an incline, and the engine moved off without the carriages. The guard taking off the brake the carriages moved after it, and a collision occurred, whereby two carriages were slightly injured. The guard was thrown off the train, but escaped with a scratch. DUNEDIN, May 3. The Port of Dunedin. During the month of April 244 persons arrived at the port of Dunedin and 372 left. Payment of Debtors’ CostsIn a case of bankruptcy this morning Judge Williams said that no order will be made for the payment of the debtor’s costs previous to the application for the order of discharge, unless it should appear either that the creditors have recommended the payment, or that the trustee has reported that the action the bankrupt took in filing was for the benefit of the general body of creditors. PireJohn Kennedy’s barn and dairy, near Gore, wore destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The place was insured in the Standard for £IOO, and the loss is estimated at £l5O. Monument to the Dewar FamilyThe Foresters are going to erect a monument to the murdered Dewar family. INVERCARGILL, May 3. Inquest. At the adjourned inquest to-day on the body of an infant found recently in the Puni creek an open verdict was returned. The police have no clue as to who placed the body in the creek.
