[PEE press association.] INVERCARGILL, May 4. Fire. Bowtell’s bootmaker’s shop and Stanford and Co.’s general store at Lamsden were burned down this morning. Stanford’s store was insured for £SOO in the New Zealand and £l5O in another office. It is not known if Bowtell, who was from home, is insured. The cause of the fire, which broke out in his shop, is yet a mystery. AUCKLAND, May 3. Steam CompaniesAt tho Kaipara Steam Navigation Company’s meeting the report showed a loss of £I3OO on the half-year. The Bay of Islands Steam Company showed a loss of £lO7 on the half-year, owing to the sinking of a good barge. Caterpillar Pest The caterpillar pest is very bad in districts south of Auckland. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 3. The Native Minister. The Native Minister is expected to leave hero to-morrow or next day for Opunake. WELLINGTON. May 3. The Post Office Savings BankTho Government have decided to open the Post Office Savings’ Banks from 6.30 p.m. to 745 p.m. on Saturday. This is done as an experiment to ascertain what benefit working man will derive from such extension. Fatal AccidentA boy, aged thirteen, was drowned oil tho Queen’s wharf. Ho wao fishing, when he lost his hold and fell in. His cries were heard, but on persons proceeding to the direction from which they came nothing could bo found. The body has not yet been recovered.
