AN EYTENSIVE DIVIDEND.

In these days of restricted money markets it is pleasant (remarks the " North Otago Times") to turn to the contemplation of probable dividends in the insolvent estates one has an interest in. These dividends are ssldom expected to be largo, and it is perhaps melancholy to relate that expectations in this direction are rarely disappointed. We will instance a cisa which has come to our knowledge. A .firm in Oamaru proved in an insolvent estate some time ago, and after waiting patiently at last received the long-expected dividend, which dividend amounted to the handsome sum of one shilling. A one shilling duty stamp had to be affixed to the proof of debt, and as the trustees were located in a town outaide Oamaru a. two-penny stamp was required to carry the necessary form to its destination. And in return for all this trouble tho grim joke was perpetrated of remitting a cheque for tho amount. To be able to turn this into coin of the realm another shilling was required, and twopence more to carry the receipt. Tho receivers of this munificont dividend are new inquiring whether it is possible that an incipient Artemus Ward exists in New Zealand, and is only waiting or a seasonable opportunity to burst on our ight with the effulgence of a farthing dip.
