GENERAL SYNOD.
Thubbday, Apbil 29. The Synod resumed at 3 o'clock. Reports of Select Committees were presented, and notices of motion given. The Bishop of Auckland moved, without notice—" That the Synod meet on Saturday morning at ten o'clock, and sit until half past twelve o'clock." Hedid not wish it to be inferred that he was in a hurry to bring the session to a conclusion, but he and other clergymen from the North Island desired to get back to their homes as soon as their presence was no longer required in the Synod. He believed that by sitting for two hours and a half on Saturday they might conclude their business.
Archdeacon Govett seconded the motion.
The Bishop of Nelson suggested that the minutes of Friday's sitting were not likely to be prepared by ten o'clock on Saturday, and it should be distinctly understood before carrying the motion that all members should attend.
Other members of the Synod spoke in a similar strain.
The motion was then put and negatived on the voices.
The Bight Bev. the Bishop of Dunedin moved—" That for the purpose of removing the doubts reforred to in the report of the committee on the position and powers of diocesan trustees rolative to the application of the Acts of tho Generil Assembly to the legislation of the General and Diocesan Synods, and for the purpose of obtaining the incorporation of bodies of trustees and for other purposes, it is expedient to have reoourse to the Legislature." Seconded by the Hon. H. B. Gresson, and after discussion carried. The Bishop of Danedin then moved—- " That a Bill be drafted to carry out these objects, such Bill to be introduced to the General Assembly with as little delay as possible."
An amendment was moved by the Bishop of Nelson to add the words "provided no olause involving the incorporation of parishes or vestries be introduced."
Tho amendment was accepted, and the reso lution as amended waa then carried.
At thi3 stage Orders of the Day wero called on.
Tho Dean of Christchurch moved the !>econd reading of tho Bill for amending clause 8 of Statute No. 14 as follows :—"Eor the words 'in the election of all eucceoding Bishops,' to substitute the words, ' whenever Ihe Bishopric of any previously existing diocese vacant.' " After discussion, a division was taken on tho question, the result being : —Bishops— Ayes 2 ; noes, 5. Olorgy—Ayes, 10 ; noes, 6. Laity—Ayes, 10 ; noes, 5. The motion was thus lost by the vote of the Bishops. The Rev. Canon Cotterill moved the second reading of the Bill to amend Statute 15. Mr Harman seconded the motion, which was carried.
The Synod then went into committee on the Bill, and on progress being reported, The Synod (at 6 o'clock) adjourned till next day.
