MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
LYTTELTON. Wbdkesbat, Apbiu 28. [Bsfore Joseph Beawict, Esq., 8.M., G. Beetham, Esq., and T. H. Potts, Esq., Justices.] Dbbeetiitg and A gsattlt. Alexander Lyell, a seaman, was charged with deserting from the ship Fleur de Lis. Captain Gordon gave evidence, as did also the chief officer. The same defendant was also charged with assaulting the chief officer. Constable Kenny testified that in his presence the accused struck the mate, and afterwards went into the forecastle, bringing out an open razor, with which he made a rush at the mate. The prisoner admitted both charges, and said he wanted to get clear of the ship. The captain said he shipped the man in Sydney, and in answer to the Bench said the prisoner had threatened to find a grave for the mate and watchman on the road home, should he not get clear of the ship here. The accused was then sentenced to one month for deserting and six months for assault. DBlNt. —Robert McKnight Dickey, under treatment for drunkenness, was further remanded for a week.
