THE ROWLAND HILL MEMORIAL.
In response to the appeal from the Lord Mayor of London, his Worship the Mayor has replied as follows : " Christchurch, New Zealand, April 24th, 1880. " The Bight Worshipful the Lord Mayor of London. "My Lord, —I had tho honor to'receive your circular letter soliciting subscriptions towards a memorial to the late Sir Bowland Hill. I regret to say that the time is exceedingly inopportune, us this colony ha 3 recently experienced very considerable commercial depression in consequence of last year's bad harvest, and it has not yet sufficiently recovered to make an appeal for subscriptions, except for cases of extreme urgency, successful ; besides which|our citizens have recentlybeencallod upon to subscribe towards the Irish Famine Fund, and not long sine 9, towards tho sufferers from the Kaitangata disaster in Otago, and also the Indian Famine Fund. Moreover, the City Council agree with me in thinking that any money which may be subscribed towards a memorial to Sir Bowland Hill should be devoted towards providing a fund for old and distressed servants in the postal service of the colony. " I have the honor to be, " Your Lordship's most obedient servant, O. T. lok, Mayor."
RACING STOCK. By the Island My, which leaves today for the Chathams, Mr Ritchie tak«» with him a very nice lot of stock. 10. the way of thoroughbreds he has Middleton, winner of the M»iden Plate and Metropolitan Handicaps in Ohristchurch, and whose breeding (being by Traducer, out of Lady Florence), is exceptionally good. JHe is of the wear-and-tear kind, and will certainly improve the breed of horses in the Chathams. Mr Ritchie also takes his Middle Park purchases, the fillies from Moss Rose, from Red Rose, and Eglantine, by Traducer, out of Moss Rose. The Moss Rose stock have so throughly proved themselves that no 30mment is required so far as they are concerned. Red Rose has tho famous Traducer cross, while Eglantine, who is in foal to Totara, is a really beautiful mare. Mr Ritchie is a very constant patron of Canterbury stock, having on the occasion of his last visit purchased some of the well-known rams from Mr Rutherford's station at Leslie Hills. We wish Mr Ritchie every success with his new purchases, and trust to be able to chronicle him as a buver aeain next season.
