IRISH RELIEF FUND.
The following letter, from his Worship the Mayor, will be dispatched by the mail to day, together with the balance of the amount collected for the above object:— " Christchurch, New Zealand, April 24th, 1880. " The Bight Hon. Dyer Gray, M.P., Lord Mayor, Dublin. " My Lord, —In response to your circular asking for subscriptions to the Irish Famine Belief Fund, I had the honor to forward by cablegram, on February 3rd last, through the Bank of New Zealand, the sum of £6OO and again on March sth an additional sum of £4OO. I now enclose a bank draft for the sum of £250 18s 3d, being the balance left in my hands after paying the expenses of advertising and collection. These sums have been subscribed by the citizens of Christchurch and surrounding country districts during a period of great commercial depression, otherwise I have reason to think the amount would have been much larger. However, I hope this donation will be acceptable, and I shall rejoice to hear that the worst is over as far as the distress in Ireland is concerned. " I have the honour to be your Lordship's most obedient servant, " O. T. lok, Mayor of Christchurch."
