WITNESSES’ EXPENSES.
During the hearing of the fire res 3 at Bangiora, on Tuesday, April 20th, a witness who demanded to know who would pay his expanses before he gavo evidence, was nearly being committed for contempt. A second witness, after'givicg evidence, put this question to the Bench, “ If a witness has no money to pay his expenses, will he be compelled to attend the Supreme Court sessions.” Mr Beswick replied that whether the man had money or not, ho would have to go all tho aamo. Witness—Well, sir, if you please, would they free rao from tho Vagrant Act if I went into an hotel in Christchurch to gat something to cat and had nothing to pay ? Mr Bos wick—Wo cannot answer that question. I belu vo the expenses of witnesses are
all paid after each trial. Witness —I shall have to get the railway that morning to give mo “ tick ” for a ticket till I come back. Its a very hard case. I’m a poor farmer without any money.
