RAILWAY BOOK STALLS.
To the Editor of the Globe. Sib, —As the Railway Commission is now sitting, there is a local matter I would wish to bring under their notice. It is why the book stalls at Lyttelton and Rangiora are closed. I understand the person who originally started these stalls threw them up in disgust at the treatment he received from the railway authorities. This year the county loses about £7O on account of the not tendering, besides the inconvenience to the travelling public. In Victoria the book stalls are held by a firm residing in Melbourne, which has a free pass to all the places where they have stalls. In New South Wales it is the same—a firm residing in Sydney has the same privilege. Now if there are no persons to be found at Lyttelton or Rangiora to keep those places open, why not offer an inducement to some one residing in Christchurch ? Yours, &0., TRAVELLER. Christchurch, 22 nd April, 1880.
