NEW RIFLE CORPS.
A well attended meeting, to consider the formation of a Volunteer corps in Sydenham, was held last night at the Colombo road school, Mr Joyce in the chair. The Chairman, in a very able speech, opened the meeting. He stated that he had seen Colonel Paeke, who had expressed his approval of the object in view, and had suggested that it be a rifle corps. Ho (the chairman) thought that in such a goahead place as Sydenham there should he no difficulty in mustering 300 Volunteers, together with a good band. A resolution affirming the desirability of forming a Volunteer corps in the borough was carried unanimously. Several members of existing Volunteer corps spoke to the motion and in encouraging terms. It was decided that the corps should be called the Sydenham Rifles A large number of persons then signed the requisition offering their services, which had been prepared for presentation to the officer commanding the district, and Messrs E. H, Pisher and E. H. Eapenett were appointed to obtain a few more signatures to make the number up to 100. Authority was given to the chairman to forward the same to the proper quar'.er. A vote of thanks to the Mayor and Councillors of Sydenham for their sympathy with the movement was passed, and the usual compliment to the chairman concluded a very orderly meeting.
