CORRESPONDENCE.
To the hditur of the tilobe. Sib, —Your correspondent "Latimer Square" is off the scent. I will use ro prologue, but to the point at once. The city of Christchurch has several ex-Mayors ; some of them —not all—during their term of office made the city a present of what they thought would be most useful to the citizens, and in this case Mr Ick is just making an offer to the citizens of what, in his opinion, is the most beneficial way of spending the £SO he ha 3 kindly offered. Aa a West-ender I would like to be rid of the nuisance of one clock at least. Moreover, the placing of that clock in the eaet will be a decided benefit to that locality, which at present has no public timekeerer. His Worship the Mayor has a perfect rifjht to do as ho pleases with the £3OO he receives from the city. Tho Ooancil votes him the money, and there is no stipulation made as to what use he may make of it. He receives it for no stated purpose whatever. There is a convincing proof that the Mayor's honorarium is not intended to cover official expenses, in citing the caße of his Worship the Mayor of Dunedin. The Council there voted his Worship an allowance o: £1 per annum, which indorses my statement that the honorarium is not intended to cover official expenses. Yours, &3 , A West bndhb.
