AUCKLAND, April 20. Embezzling Government FundsAt the Supreme Court yesterday J. C. Young was charged with embezzling £sl, the property of the Government. Mr Brookfield prosecuted, and Messrs Hesketh and Taylor defended. Tho case came to a close unexpectedly, as two of the native witnesses got into a fog over the accounts placed before them, and contradicted each other. The Crown prosecutor said thot after the evidence of the last witnesses he did not see how the jury could convict. His Honor remarked that the evidence was not such as they could convict a man of felony upon, and directed the jury to return a verdict of ‘ Not Guilty.’ Tho prisoner was admitted to bail to answer other indictments. Mr O. O. Davis entered into his recognisance for £SOO for the prisoner’s appearance on Wednesday, when the next case will be tried. NAPIEB, April 20. An Extensive Crash.. Mr B. D. Manly, who contested last election for the seat for Napier, has filed his schedule. Tho liabilities are£22,021 andthoassetߣ2o,42o, £17,400 being secured by mortgage. At a meeting of creditors yesterday it was resolved to withdraw the bankruptcy and to grant Mr Manly twelve months to collect the debts due to him. The following appointments appear in the “ Gazette " ; —Philip Baker Boulton, to bo cattle inspector for the cattle district of Canterbury ; and Reginald Foster, Robert P. Holderaess, and James Macdonald, to be deputy cattle inspectors for the same district. Robert Wilkin, Frederick William Kimboll, Charles Newton, John Thomas Peacock, and John Studhclmo, to be members of the Local Cattle Board for the district of Canterbury ; and also to appoint Robert Wilkin to bo chairman of the said Cattle Board. A Client and Ms BankAt the Supremo Court, in the case of Richardson v Bank of New South Wales, for breach of agreement, the jury gave a verdict for Is damages. The case of the Bant of New South Wales v Richardson was heard. The action was brought to recover the sum of £2429, the amount alleged to be due to the Bank for an overdraft. The defence was that the Bank agreed to allow the defendant an overdraft to the extent of £3OOO for six months, and which agreement had been broken. The jury gave a verdict for £2094, and £4 interest.

The Stella. The Stella has sailed on a cruise to the southern lighthouses, alter which she visits the Auckland Islands to ascertain if there are any castaways on the Islands. NELSON, April 19. The Anchor Line of SteamersThe tender of the owners of tho Anchor line of steamers for the service of the West Coast of the Middle Island, which was formerly performed by the Union Company’s steamer Maori, has been accepted. The Uproarious ClubitssThe charges against Messrs Bunny, Teschemaker, Percy Adams, and Langley Adams, were heard to-day. Regarding the charge against Mr Teschemaker tha Bench said he had acted in a manner becoming a gentleman and magistrate in endeavoring to keep tho peace and prevent an assault. His case was dismissed. On the charge against Mr Bunny the Magistrate found that he acted simply in self-defence, and dismissed the case. On the charge against Mr Langley Adams tho defendant stated that seeing Mr Teschemaker holding his brother he remonstrated on the ground of fair ploy. Tho Bench failed to understand how he could have been so greatly mistaken, but believed his statement. He was fined 20s and costs. Mr Percy Adams was bound over to keep the peace for six months, himself in £SO, and two sureties of £23

each. OAMARU, April 19. Fire. Two stacks of wheat, belonging to Mr Foley, Papakaio, wore destroyed by firo on Saturday night, between nine and ton o’clock. They are believed to be insured, but the amount is unknown. Fatal AccidentA man named Henry Aitkon, engaged in working at a threshing machine near Duntroon, met with his death to-day under peculiar circumstances. He, with two companions, had been in Duntroon on April 16th. After taking some drink, they engaged an express and drove off towards the mill. After driving a little distance Aitken fell off. His mates, thinking he was drunk and that nothing was wrong with him otherwise, took him into the mill and laid him in it. Tho following morning they visited him, and as he refused to come down from the mill they left him there. On again going to him yesterday morning Aitken complained of being hurt about the back of tbe neck, aud not being able to move they lifted him down. He was brought into the Hospital last evening and attended to, but expired this afternoon at half-past three. An inquest will be held. The Case of InfanticideJulia Paul, who murdered her infant in gaol on Sunday morning, was brought before the Court this morning and remanded for medical examination as to her sanity. DUNEDIN, April 19. The s-s- Kakanui. The s.s. Kakanui went ashore at Toi Tois this morning while attemping to cross the bar. It is not known yot whether she will get off. The insurances are in the South British, National, Now Zealand, Union, Victoria, aud Standard, £SOO in each. BALOLUXHA, April 19. Fire A firo occurred at Mr Wood’s farm, Waitepeka, on Saturday afternoon, when 1000 bushels threshed oats, and one stack containing 200 bushels, and a barn were consumed. Gatlin River Railway. Tenders were recently called for tho formation of a section of the Catlias river railway, but it appears that no tender has been accepted, the Government having decided not to proceed further with the line.
