The following are the results of the Pupil Teachers' Examinations, held at tho Normal School, on March 16th, 17th, and 18th. P and P stand for "Passed " and " Pailed " respectively. COMMENCEMENT OF FIRST TEAE.
SHOOIING A PARMER FOR A " LARK." At tha Leicestershire Aaahee, before Lord Ohief Justice Cockburn, William Swain Antill, twenty-two, stonemason, was indictod for shooting Samuel Priestley Simpson, farmer, Rotbley, with intent to murder him, on the 30th of Septornber laat. On the evening in question prosecutor overtook prieoner on the road between Rothloy end Montaorrel, and accompanied Lim to the latter place, where they parted. Later on, while roturning home, proesculor saw prisoner standing in the doorway of a hovel on hie!
premises. Prisoner complained of being cold, and as he said he was going on to Leicester prosecutor invited him into the house to wairn himself. The prosecutor went on in front in order to light the fire, and while raking the embers together, he heard prisoner enter the room, and a pistol shot was fired. The bullet passed through the prosecutor's coat collar, and lodged in his right jaw. On seeing what had happened, Aniill said he merely fired the pistol fcr a " lark," and intended to hit the ceiling. He then left the house, and was ap prehended the next day at Loughborough, when he eipressed sorrow for what had occurred, and said there was nothing but paper and powder in the pistol. The defence was that prisoner merely intended carrying out a practical joke on prosecutor. The jury found a verdict of unlawfully wounding, and prisoner was sentenced to twelve months' hard labor.
