CANTERBURY ANGLERS' SOCIETY.

The first half-yearly general meeting of this society w<ib held last evening at the Commercial Hotel; the president (Dr. Campbell) in tho chair. The report submitted by the secretary showed that good results had attended the labcra of tho society sinceits formation, and that the Acclimatisation Council had ueed their best endeavors to aid the society in putting a stop to unsportsmanlike fishing. There wero thirty-six members on the roll of the society, but only nineteen had paid their subscription. Considerable discussion took place on members allowing themselves to remain in arrears after subscribing to the rules of tho society, and eventually it was decided not to put rule 4 into operation until after the next general meeting. The spread of the American weed in the river was the subject of some conversation, and the chairman stated that from his own observation he knew that through its means the river had risen over a foot. In reply to the chairman, Mr Cunningham stated that he had seen a Californian salmon taken out of the lower Heathcote during the recent eoaaon. At his request the fish was returned to the river. Mr Cook said his brother had two years ago taken two in the Waimakariri, and one in the Avon. He had heard that numbers of salmon were to be seen in the North branch of the Waimakariri. On tho suggestion of the Rev. J. D. Fergusson, it waj decided to endeavor to obtain permission from the Acclimatisation Council to try the rivers for salmon during the close season. It was also resolved that the secretary should bring under the notice of the Acclimatisation Council the circumstance of trout being poisoned in the Little River by sawdust shot into that stream. The meeting terminited with hearty votes of thanks to the president for hij exertions during the season in the interests of the society.
