LYTTELTON COLONISTS’ SOCIETY.
A special meeting of the members of this Society was held on Tuesday night in the Society’s hall at Port, for the purpose of receiving a financial sta'ement, and for arranging for the future conduct of the Society. The committee’s statement of the pecuniary position of the institution showed a balance in hand of £lO I9s Id, and ihe report submitred by them recommended that tne whole of the property known as the Colonists’ Hall and the library be conveyed to the borough for the benefit of the townspeople, the Municipal authorities to take it over subject to but one iM-auiu., -i.-, ft Ke opened as formerly with a free reading-room. Messrs H. N. Nalder, H. Allwright, J. S. Willcox, and Dr. Rouse opposed this proposal, and urged that the institution be continued as a subscription society. A resolution embodying the committee’s proposal was put, and after an acrimonious debate carried, ten voting for it and eight against. The meeting then adjourned, the committee to report to a general m.etingto beheld on May llth.
