ON, April 14. The Hotomahana
Much anxiety was felt here for the safety of the Rotomahana. which left this port yesterday with the Southern San Francisco mails, and was not heard of up to this afternoon. The Government, on the representation of the postal authorities, ordered the Hinemoa to get up steam and proceed in search of the missing steamer. The H+wpa, however, arrived in the afternoon, and Captain Kennedy reported meeting the Rotomahana only seventy miles from Wellington Heads at 3.30 this morning, having thus made only seventy miles in fourteen hours, and labouring heavily in a severe gale and territic sea. Just afterwards her arrival at Lyttelton was telegraphed, so the Hinemoa’s departure was countermanded. Last Year’s AccountsThe books of the Treasury were finally closed this afternoon for the accounts of the last financial year, so that no further receipts or disbursements will be charged to the account of that year, but all will be carried, forward. It will take some days to balance the books, and all the Treasury officers are working day and night to bring out the balance sheet with all possible speed, in order that the Treasurer may know exactly what he has to provide for in bis estimates at the earliest practicable date, and have plenty of time before him before the meeting of Parliament. The result will probably not be definitely known for a week or so, and nothing fresh has transpired rega;ding the financial position of the colony beyond what I have already telegraphed.
