SYDENHAM AMATEUR MUSICAL SOCIETY.

The initial concert of this newly-formed society, given in the Sydenham District School.-’"*"™ l aß t night, was highly successful, gveat promise of furnishing a deliy>VPj u ‘ s<>urce of enjoyment to the muicaliy disposed inhabitants of the borough duing the approaching long winter evenings. Ttu strength, c f the society at present lies in thiir ability:"to render part songs and glees in a highly creditable manner, which speaks volumes for the industry and aptitude of the members and the zeal and ability of the conductor, Mr Edmonds. Some of the most characteristic specimens of the favorite English glee composers were given last night with an attention to rhythm and harmony, and a delicacy of light and shade, which entitle the executants to very great praise and encouragement to persevere. The best rendered was the fine old English air “ The Ash Grove,” arranged as a double quartette; “ The Cloud Cap’t Towers,” by Stevens; “Here in Cool Grot,” by Lord Mornington ; and “ Shepherds, have you seen my Love.” The solos were of more or less merit, the feature in this respect being Mr Edmonds’ masterly rendering of the fine bass song “ The Old Sexton.” The room was well filled, and every one appeared thoroughly pleased with tt e treat provided them.
