FATAL ACCIDENTS

An accident of a fatal nature occurred on the Southern line on Saturday evening. It appears that as the express was nearing the Rakaia station a man whoso name has not yet been ascertained, but who was travelling second class, fell from the train and the whole of the carriages passed over him. From what can be ascertained, it appears that the unfortunate man was seated on the floor of the platform, with his legs hanging down by the couplings of the sarriage, and was suddenly aeen to fall down on to the line. The alarm was at once given, and immediately on reaching Rakaia Mr O. 0. O. Duncan, with guard Heaton, who was in charge of the train, went "back with a goods engine. On arriving at the Bpot where the man fell his body •was discovered lying on the rails frightfully mutilated. The remains were placed upon a trolly and brought back to Rakaia, where an inquest will be held at noon to-day. From a telegram received last night, it appears that, from articles found on the person of the unfortunate man, he was a tailor from Winchester.

A fatal accident occurred at Timaru, on Wednesday, April Bth. An old and respected resident, named Thomas Hughes, left the town in a dray on the evening of that day for his home, on the Kingadown estate, in company with another man named Joyce. They had not gone far on the road, when Mr Hughes was noticed to fall out of the dray. He was picked up insensible and taken to his home by Mr Joyce, but he never recovered. Dr. liovegrove attended him next day, but he died before tho doctor left the house. An inquest was held on Saturday, when it appeared that he fell out of the dray in a. fit, to which he had been subject, and a verdict of " Accidental Death " was returned.
