ACADEMY OF MUSIC.
The play of “Hamlet” was produced last evening at the Academy of Music, and was both acted and put on the stage in a manner deserving the greatest credit. Miss Adelaide Bowring played the Queen excellently throughout. She was perhaps more successful in the closet scene than any, but her rendering of the part as a whole was a highly artistic and finished one. Miss Arethusa May was the Ophelia, and her performance was a very creditable one indeed, and there there was an absence of that pathos and softness which are the characteristics of the part. Miss Nye had little to do as Osric, but did that well. Of Mr Burford’s Hamlet it is impossible to speak too highly. It was certainly a very scholarly performance, and one which showed Mr Burford to be a sincere and intelligent student of Shakspeare. Mr Clinton made a very good King, aud doubled the part of the Ghost, and Mr Musgrave was, as he always'is, excellent as Polonius. Mr Tyrrell made the fiery Laertes rather too tempestuous, but otherwise it was creditable, and Mr Hooper was successful as Horatio. The other parts were well filled. A very pretty innovation was made in the introduction of several tableaux with the lime light, introducing the Ghost and Ophelia after her death. These were very effectively managed, and added greatly to the general success of the piece. To-night “Susan Hopley” and “Dick Turpin” will be played.
