KAIAPOI VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE.
On Monday, the practice of this Brigade was held on the premises of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company. The engine was drawn to the spot from 'the station by a pair of horses, the time occupied being seven minutes, during which the engine fire was lighted, and steam could have been got up in at least eleven minutes, within which time the hose and connexions might have been laid but for the fact that the coupling to the service pipe placed by the company (into the river was not quite perfect. This will be at once remedied, and in case of an alarm of fire being given it is now pretty certain that in about fifteen minutes the steam engine might be brought into full play. Mr Superintendent Smith and a large number of the Brigade were present., and arrangements made for placing the engine at a fire should such an accident ever happen at the factory.
