He enjoys good health, except in the matter of the old affection of his leg, caused by a spear wound received in Western Australia. WELLINGTON, April 2. A Horrible Death. A woman named Cathoilne McColl, sixty years of age, was burnt to death last night or early this morning, under horrible circumstances. She was housekeeper to a gentleman named John McLaughlan, and was last seen by him 'about one last night, when she was lying on a sofa helplessly drunk. He left her there and went to bed, leaving the candle burning. On rising this morning, he found her charred remains. With the exception of her stays, all her clothing was burnt and portions of the wall had also been on fire. Mr McLaughlan states he heard no noise during the night, and is unable to say how she was burnt. The deceased had been drinking heavily for about ten days. An inquest will be held to-morrow.

DUNEDIN. April 2. The Customs revenue for the March quarter is £85,661, against £1C3,162 last year. The Late Review. All the papers here call on the volunteer authorities to institute a searching enquiry into the charges against the Southern volunteers and to make examples of the offenders. A man named Thomas Young alias McGregor was committed for trial for uttering a forged cheque of £SO. “Gazette” Notices. TIMAEU, April 1. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics for the Timaru district last month are 31 births, 21 deaths, and 11 marriages. Customs Revenue. The Customs revenue for the Port of Timaru in March was £1355 18s 41, showing a slight increase over the corresponding month last year. The Harbour BoardThe Harbor Board to day resolved to procure a dredging machine from home. It was also resolved to leave the disputed claim between Mr John Anderson and the Board, re payment for the crane to arbitration. The tender of Messrs. Cargill, Gibbs and Co. for 1000 tons cement was accepted at £4 11* per ton. DUNEDIN. April 1. Labour League. A labor league was formed last night, and a mass meeting of the unemployed will be held on Saturday.
