PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.
A meeting of members of the Philosophical Institute was held at the rooms of the institute last evening. There was an excellent attendance of members. Major Bamfield and Mr W. Malcolm were elected members of the Institute. Mr A. D. Dobson read an interesting paper on a very curious volcanic dyke in the Healhcote Valley. The reading of the paper was followed by a discussion on the volcanic dykes of the locality, in which Professors Bickerton, Hutton and Yon Haast, and several other members took part. Mr O. W. Adams then read a paper on “ Notes on suitable subjects for papers.” Among the subjects which Mr Adams suggested for papers for the Institute were — “ Sanitary precautions needed for health,” “ A healthy house,” “ Ventilation of public buildings, “Drainage,” “ Means of transit on sea and land,” “ Mensuration,” “ Signalling,” and “ Cremation.” Mr G. Gray was duly elected bon. secretary of the Institute, vice Mr N. K. Cherrill resigned. Notice was given that the vacancy in the Council would have to te filled up at the next meeting of the Institute. The meeting then adjourned to Thursday, May 6th.
