THE ACCIDENT TO MR STEVENS.
It will be recollected that a cablegram from Sydney appeared in this journal some time back stating that Mr Stevens, the first officer of the steamer Wakatipu, had received very Bevere injuries through an accident that had occurred on board. It appears that Mr Stevens was in the hold of the vessel superintending the landing of the cargo. A number of 2cwt. bags of horseshoes were being slung up—they had, in fact, reached the deck—when the Bling slipped and down they went. Mr Stevens was standing in the lower hold, and one of the bags struck him with fearful force on the right side, forcing him against an iron tank. Of course the blow knocked him into a state of insensibility. Instantly all the men who saw the accident rushed to his aid, and upon examination it was found that the unfortunate officer had his right thigh broken a few inches below the hip. On being taken to the hospital the injured limb was dressed, and shortly afterwards the sufferer regained consciousness. On further examination it was found that he was paralysed from his waist downwards, and his spine was also hurt. When the extent of the injuries were made known to Mr Stevons, he exclaimed that it would have been better had he been killed.
