EATING IN SYDENHAM.
To the Editor of the Globe.
SlB, —I am living in Sydenham. The extreme V3lue of my house is 123 per week, but I was rated at £4O; therefore, as we are supposed to be rated 20 per cent, less than the value of the property, the valuator must have corieiderad mine to be worth £SO a year. At the expense of a day's work, 12s, and one journey to the borough office, I got it reduced to £27. My neighbor, on one side of me, by doing the same, got his reduced from £4O to £22 ; my neighbor, on the other side, from £35 to £27. Now, sir, as Ido not believe the borough has any officer simple enough to think my house is worth £SO per year, I am bound to believe it to be a system of trying to bounce money out of the ratepayers' pockets. If such is tho case, I think, sir, you will agree with me that it is quite time a more respectable system was invented to raise money. If it is not so, then it is time we had a competent valuator. I believe there are about two hundred cases in the borough similar to mine. By inserting tho above in your paper you will oblige. Tours, Sea., A. B. South Belt, March 29.*, 1880.
